The challenge

Sloped sites bring their own set of demands. Our team needed to cut into the existing ground level carefully, manage the spoil generated by the dig, and protect the mature hedge line and boundary wall throughout the works. Access for machinery and concrete delivery also had to be planned around the site’s layout and the slope itself.

Excavation and site preparation

Our team began with excavation, cutting back into the elevated garden to create a level, workable base. Two excavators worked the site, moving and grading material to shape the ground ready for the next stage. Because the plot sits on a slope, getting the levels right at this stage was essential before any foundation work could begin.

Drainage preparation

Alongside the excavation, we carried out drainage preparation works. Getting drainage right early in a project like this matters, since water needs a clear route away from the new structure and the surrounding garden. Planning this stage properly now helps prevent problems with standing water or poor run-off once the outbuilding is finished.

Reinforcement and concrete works

With the ground prepared, our team moved on to reinforced concrete works. A steel reinforcement mat was laid out across the base, ready to receive the concrete pour. A concrete pump and ready-mix lorry were brought on site to place the concrete efficiently, even with the site’s restricted access and sloped approach.

This stage gives the outbuilding a strong, stable base to build from. Reinforced concrete adds durability and helps the structure cope with ground movement over time, which matters on a sloped plot like this one.

Working around an established garden

Throughout the project, our team took care to protect the mature hedging, boundary wall and surrounding garden areas. Established planting like this often takes years to grow, so we worked carefully around it rather than treating it as an obstacle to clear.
